Network scanner email delivery fails after migrating from on-premises Exchange to Microsoft 365

The problem: A scanner configured to email scanned documents directly (scan-to-email) stops working after the organization migrates its mail system from on-premises Exchange to Microsoft 365, despite the scanner's SMTP settings appearing unchanged.
Symptoms: Scan-to-email jobs fail with an authentication or connection error; the scanner's configured SMTP server address (previously the on-premises Exchange server) is no longer valid or reachable in the same way post-migration; other scan destinations (folder, USB) continue working.
Likely cause: Microsoft 365 requires different SMTP relay configuration than typical on-premises Exchange, including different server addresses, mandatory TLS encryption, and modern authentication requirements that many older scanner models' basic SMTP client implementations don't support out of the box.
